Changes to the content of CSA Z1220-2024 first aid kits
The CSA Z1220-2024 standard applicable to workplace first aid kits introduces several changes to the contents of Type I, II, and III kits. These modifications aim to remove certain products that are no longer mandatory and to add equipment that improves emergency care.
Â
Main items removed from the standard
The following items are no longer part of the mandatory contents of first aid kits:
- Single-use topical antibiotic ointments
The removal of these products reflects the evolution of first aid practices and the desire to limit the use of certain medicinal products in workplace kits.
Â
Items added or quantities modified
The standard also introduces some new items to improve response capabilities during incidents:
- Aluminized emergency blanket (thermal blanket) added to help prevent hypothermia or shock in a victim.
- Elastic bandage and quantity of abdominal compresses adjusted.
- Arterial tourniquet integrated into all Type II kits to allow better control of severe hemorrhages.
Â
Adjustments applicable to Type I, II, and III kits
The modifications apply to the different categories of kits, with quantities adjusted according to the type of kit:Â
Type I Kit
Intended for low-risk environments and a limited number of workers.
Main modifications:
- Removal of topical antibiotic ointments;
- Increase in the width of the elastic bandage (3in instead of 2in);
- Addition of an aluminized emergency blanket.
Â
Type II Kit
Used in medium-sized workplaces.
Main modifications:
- Removal of topical antibiotic ointments;
- Addition of 2 abdominal compresses for the "large kit" format (4 compresses instead of 2)
- Integration of the arterial tourniquet into all kit sizes.
Â
Type III Kit
Intended for larger workplaces or those with higher risks.
Main modifications:
- Removal of topical antibiotic ointments;
- Adjustment of quantities of abdominal compresses :
- Small kit – Addition of one extra compress (2 instead of 1)
- Medium kit – Addition of 2 extra compresses (4 instead of 2)
- Medium kit – Addition of 2 extra compresses (6 instead of 4)

Other clarifications from the standard
The CSA Z1220-2024 standard also specifies that products included in the kits must be latex-free, in order to reduce the risk of allergic reactions.
