Heart Month: How a defibrillator can save a life
Every year, February marks Heart Month in Canada, a key time to raise awareness about cardiovascular health, heart disease, and life-saving actions. Cardiac arrest is one of the most critical emergencies, as it occurs suddenly and leaves very little time to act. In this context, rapid access to a defibrillator allows for immediate action and can make all the difference.
The numbers that matter
Recent data highlights the importance of awareness. Indeed, heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Canada, with nearly 58,000 deaths in 2023.
Out-of-hospital cardiac arrests
Each year, approximately 60,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals, or about one every nine minutes. Unfortunately, only one in ten people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, often because intervention is not quick enough. The presence of a nearby defibrillator helps bridge the delay before emergency services arrive and can make the difference between life and death.
Despite medical advancements, cardiac arrest remains an unpredictable and potentially fatal emergency. Prevention is important, but it is not enough on its own: being ready to intervene quickly when a cardiac arrest occurs is just as essential.
Why is February Heart Month?
Heart Month is an annual opportunity to educate the public about cardiovascular risks and promote healthy lifestyle habits such as physical activity, a balanced diet, and screening. But Heart Month is also an important reminder: better recognizing a cardiac emergency and knowing how to react can make all the difference. Cardiac arrest can occur without warning, at any age and anywhere.
Being informed and prepared means empowering yourself to act when every second counts.
Why is cardiac arrest so dangerous?
Cardiac arrest is a major medical emergency because the heart suddenly stops pumping blood. Without blood circulation, the brain begins to lack oxygen after only a few minutes, leading to irreversible damage or even death.
Every minute without intervention drastically reduces the chances of survival. However, even when emergency services are called immediately, their arrival can take several minutes, especially when cardiac arrest occurs at home or in a remote area. It is during this critical time that rapid intervention and access to a defibrillator become essential.
Contrary to what is still too often believed, cardiac arrest does not only affect the elderly or already ill. It can occur:
-
at home,
-
at work,
-
in a public place,
-
during a sports activity,
-
without warning signs.
That's why being prepared is essential.
How to react in case of cardiac arrest?
When cardiac arrest occurs, the chain of survival relies on three simple but very important actions:
-
quickly recognize the situation and call for help
-
begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
-
use an automated external defibrillator (AED) when nearby
These actions, taken in the first few minutes, can literally save a life.
How can a defibrillator save a life?
An automated external defibrillator, or AED, is designed to be used by people without medical training. It plays a crucial role in the chain of survival in case of cardiac arrest and allows for action while emergency services are on their way.
An AED:
-
automatically analyzes heart rhythm
-
provides clear voice instructions to the rescuer
-
delivers a shock only if necessary
Since time is the most crucial factor in cardiac arrest, rapid access to a defibrillator is not just an asset: it is an indispensable element of the chain of survival.
Having a defibrillator at home can save a life
During Heart Month, prevention is often discussed, but it is equally important to be prepared for unforeseen situations.
Act within the first few minutes
Having a defibrillator at home is a proactive and, above all, accessible safety measure. It allows for intervention in the very first minutes, a critical time when every second counts. This is a tangible way to protect family members and loved ones while waiting for emergency services, thereby increasing survival chances.
Prevent, act, save
Heart Month invites us to take care of our cardiovascular health, but also to reflect on our ability to intervene in an emergency. Raising awareness, knowing how to recognize a cardiac arrest, and having the necessary equipment at hand are among the actions that can save a life.
At Cardio Choc, our commitment is first and foremost to the safety and protection of individuals. We believe that access to a defibrillator and clear information can make a real difference when cardiac arrest occurs.
Our goal is to simplify access to automated external defibrillators and to provide reliable resources to help everyone feel better prepared for an emergency. By making these tools more accessible, we contribute to strengthening the response capabilities of families, organizations, and communities.
Because in the event of cardiac arrest, being prepared can literally save a life.
